Our 2017 season kicked off with members taking part in the early season Galston Hilly TT.  Greig Mushet and Colin Sales put down times of 00:48:04 and 00:44:09 respectively.  Greig also competed in the Lang Whang Hilly TT where in conditions described as ‘brutal’ he was rewarded with a another respectable time of 01:34:46.

We held our annual Fixation event on Millport at the end of March – a celebration of all things single speed.  Even members without a Fixie took part – and never changed gear whilst on the island (apparently!).

A week later it was race day up at Crit On The Campus.  Simon Arnold & Gary Kelly flew the flag for Paisley Velo and apart from a few scratches and heavy legs they provided spectators with a tough and gritty performance.

On the same day, our youngest member Ciaran Kirkpatrick held onto the bunch in the Fenwick APR but punctured just as the Old Glasgow Road started to descend – unluckly!

The ‘Wattbike No Excuses Sportive’ was next on the cards and it was Liam McDaids turn to show off the Velo colours, and he did so in style!  A sterling effort from Liam in near perfect conditions, but on a tricky course.

Our Tuesday Hill Training kicked off in April with hill repeats of the Chain Road, Bowfield and Auchenlodment Hills.  Even Hazelwood Road in Bridge Of Weir got a look in!  After only a few weeks members are already feeling the benefit of these sessions.

Fast forward another week into April and it was time for the Evans Callander Sportive.  Our Big Ring group had also planned a trip to Aberfoyle and who did they meet whilst sat with their coffee and cake at Liz McGregors Coffee Shop?  Yep, our members passed and were just about to ascend Dukes Pass halfway through their sportive.  A great day in the saddle for everyone – couldn’t have asked for better weather really!

Ciaran Kirkpatrick took part in the Jack Murray Junior Trophy and caught the eye of Scottish Cycling after doing a sterling shift up at the head of the race.   He’s now been invited to take part in a training session with the governing body and he’s now got extra motivation in the form of a brand new bike for his 18th Birthday.  We wish him all the best and we’ll let you know how he gets on it due course.

The majority of our members once again took part in this years Pedal The Park Sportive which took riders round the coast to Inverkip, up the Greenock Cut, down into Largs and up Fairlie Moor!  A great turnout from Paisley Velo and once again the sun made an appearance.

Back to Time Trials, Greig Mushet was racing in the Fullarton Wheelers Spring Meeting and managed to get just one second off his PB!  Well done Greig!!

Meanwhile, a group of members and friends jetted off to the Balearics to take on some of Mallorca's iconic climbs such as Sa Colabra.  A great time was had by everyone and they're already talking about heading away again next year.

Series A of our own club-confined time trial championship started at the end of April, with competition hotting up between a few riders already – times on the Georgetown Road course are very tight indeed!  This is definitely a championship to keep a close eye on as standings could change at any point!

Greig Mushet was back in action on the West Ferry course for the Glasgow Nightingale TT – Greig described the race as ‘tough’ but still managed to log a time of 0:26:14.  Great effort!!

We can report that members completed the Gran Fondo Tour of Ayrshire despite a brutal headwind.  Well done to Mark Hanlon, Pat Denholm, Greg Hiddleston, Dimitar Nechev, Hadyn Pritchard & friends for a sterling effort in horrible conditions.

In other disciplines, Mark Logan and friends took on 10 Under The Ben.  Mark reported a busy and well organised event, we hope to see a few more Velo riders try it out next year!

Looking ahead to May, we’ll be splitting our Series A Time Trial riders into more competitive groups (a bit like the football league split!), we’re taking part in the Cambusbarron TT, the CTT Georgetown League, the KOM Sportive, the Five Ferries route…  and of course our own club runs, hill training, and much more including some action at the Velodrome!!  Keep up to date with us at on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and this website.

Finally, we have to say we are delighted that our Sunday club runs have been very well attended to the point where we’re maintaining three ‘ring’ groups to cater for all levels!  New members are always welcome!  Please come along to QBikes on Neilston Road on a Sunday morning – we meet at 8.50am and depart in our groups at 9am.  New members are advised to join the ‘wee ring’ group at first.  Let us know if you’re interested in coming along – email This email address is being protected from spambots.
